The Ashanti Tribe
Friday, April 18th, 2008Ashanti shares her name with a tribe in Africa, so if she’s ever going to go there she’ll need to know some facts!
The Ashanti Tribe are an ethnic group of the Akans who reside in Ghana in Western Africa. The Ashanti were once known for their brilliance and wealth amongst rulers. But now known for hand-carved tools, fertility dolls, and colorful Kente cloth which is woven with bright strips by the men in complex patterns.
For the Ashanti, family, especially the mother’s side, is the most important. The children inherit the father’s soul and spirit but the flesh and blood come from the mother.

The boys are trained by whatever the father chooses and the father pays for schooling. The girls are taught how to cook and keep up the household by their mothers.
The men may marry more than one woman, showing generosity to a large family, although the two won’t meet until they are married.
If Ashanti Tribe members give handshakes with their left hand, it is a sign of trust.
