Keep your ears peeled, music fans: fifteen of the hottest women in the business today, young and old, will be joining forces on September 2 on their new collective song, “Just Stand Up”. The single’s sales are going towards cancer research funding.

Even better, the fifteen women will be performing the song live on the “Stand Up To Cancer” television special, which will be airing on ABC, NBC and CBS simultaneously (probably among other networks). It’s include plenty of other celebs among the singers, including Lance Armstrong, Sally Field, Salma Hayek and Forest Whitaker.

And who are the singers? None other than Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna, Fergie, Sheryl Crow, Miley Cyrus, Melissa Etheridge, Natasha Bedingfield, Keyshia Cole, Ciara, Leona Lewis, LeAnn Rimes, Carrie Underwood and, of course, Ashanti.

The R&B singer was named a tourism ambassador by Nassau County in Long Island, one of nine to be introduced by the county. All nine will be responsible for bringing in visitors with their image of Nassau as “The Island Next Door”.

Proud? Don’t be so quick. She’s already been hit with some controversy. Apparently a Republican lawmaker is slamming Ashanti and her promoters for using Nassau County’s funds for her personal expenses, including having her hair done and staying at a hotel. The total amount hits close to $7,000.

And that’s public money. Lovely.

The star singer recently released a new album (The Declaration). And off that album came a song, “Good Good”. And that song just recently had the premiere of its video.

Now, the song on its own makes enough of an impression. It talks about how Ashanti’s man won’t leave her or cheat on her (unlike other women) because she’s willing to do things other women won’t. Suggestive enough?

Well, that’s where the video comes it. It consists of Ashanti essentially doing all the duties of a traditional housewife while wearing a slew of revealing outfits, the skimpiest of which (a maid’s outfit) makes her look topless in some shots. In other words, do everything a good woman should, and your man won’t leave you. Pleasure him every night when he gets home, make him dinner, make sure he’s all rested, obey him, and he’ll never cheat.

Right. Well. That was a big step back.

Why? Well, partly because Terrence Howard plays a big part in the action of the story. It’s the tale of a romance between him and Ashanti wherein he woos her, cheats on her and is sent packing.

Of great interest, however, is, the fact that the video has actual voiceovers at points. There isn’t the usual silent talking in-video, you get to see what these people are actually saying to each other.

So it’s no surprise that the video was a three-time nominee at the 2002 Much Music Video Awards, not to mention a major hit on the U.S. charts. Now, if only other songs could tell stories so well…

As the title hints the song makes excessive use of the word baby, though not in reference to a child but instead to an unidentified man. Baby is a love song through and through, and features the kind of unabashed adoration that you only usually see in your first relationship (or in 80 percent of the songs available on the market today).

Baby was the third single on Ashanti’s 2002 album, aptly named Ashanti. It works in tandem with the rest of the songs on the album, detailing Ashanti’s love life in lyrical form. It works in just around the time where the girl falls inextricably in love with the guy but before he breaks her heart.

But are they still? It seems hard to tell. The pair claim that, after being seen snuggling up to one another rather cozily in a variety of locales, they’re just good friends at the moment. And by all accounts this could very well be true.

But who knows? Pictures of them online look much more cuddly than you’d think for “just friends”. They look as much the couple as you would expect. Given the penchant for celebrities trying to hide their relationships from the press, however, we may never know definitively if the pair is done for for good or not.
